Has there ever been a time where you were told that religion and politics should be separated and held as two different entities? If your answer is no there is a very high chance that you may have been raised on the same belief system as my family. Even though my family was made up of ministers and members of the clergy they also played major roles in politics. In a sense, religion and politics were and still are held in the same esteem.
Just because my grandfather was a religious leader did not mean he tried to shy away from the political system. In fact, I have come to believe that he used his leadership in religious affairs to help him gain ground in politics. During an interview with my grandmother, she told me that FDH was among the first few Black religious leaders that attended the Democratic National Convention. As our conversation progressed I was also informed that FDH was the first African American to run for Supervisor of the city of San Francisco. Although he was unable to win the majority of the votes, he was the first Black to serve on San Francisco's city commission, a mayor appointed position.
During his lifetime he held correspondence with political greats such as former president Franklin Delano Roosevelt and WEB Dubois.
