James Baldwin once said “Know whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” This quote embodies one of many family values that has been passed on from generation to generation. I am very fortunate to have a family that prizes knowledge of our ancestral past. Included in my interdisciplinary research are historical and cultural aspects. I believe that it is important to note that because of the elders in my family I have developed the strong belief that one should be knowledgeable of their family history and culture. Consequently, my research, interviews, and any other collections of family history did not start with this project. I have had an intense desire to gain as much knowledge about my history and culture for quite sometime now. This interdisciplinary project has simply allowed me to collect all of my data and put it in one place. More importantly, it has also allowed me to fully examine certain aspects of my history that has had an impact on my belief system.
